THE OAKVILLE STROKERS
The Oakville Strokers is a registered community charity for stroke survivors.
It is operated by an Advisory Board of Volunteers in close collaboration with the Town of Oakville Recreation and Culture Department and the Physiotherapy Department of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
The program began in the spring of 1995 with 3 Participants and 4 Volunteers. It has grown steadily and now has approximately 35 Participants and 50 Volunteers.
We meet on Fridays at the Glen Abbey Community Centre, at 1415 Third Line, Oakville.
There are three, ten-week sessions: Autumn, Winter, and Spring.
Each weekly program begins with a socializing and light refreshment time, followed by low impact streatching exercises, and one hour in the pool with the help of volunteers. The Glen Abbey pool is reserved for our exclusive use for this time.
Participants then enjoy a group lunch (which they provide), followed by card games, arts and crafts, board games, and other leisure activities. Emphasis is placed on fostering a warm, caring and cooperative environment. Above all, it is fun and rewarding for all.
“Everyone is so friendly and optimistic, despite whatever difficulties they may have had, and everyone involved in the program has such a sense of fun about them that makes every Friday so enjoyable.”
